Cervical incompetence –Preterm labor
Preterm birth is the main cause of fetal and neonatal mortality and morbidity. Prematurity is responsible for many of the chronic diseases that appear after the 3rd decade of life. Prematurity has been increasing dramatically in the last 30 years. There are many reasons for this but the most important of them all is premature cervical shortening due to placental and uterine inflammation. In most patients, this inflammation is the result of placental necrosis/degeneration secondary to placental clotting of variable degrees. Proper treatment and monitoring can reduce prematurity in high-risk patients by as much as 90%. Educate your self and learn how to talk to your obstetrician.
